About Kate Word
I am 69 this year. I had no idea I'd live this long or get here so fast! Both my parents & both siblings are gone, so God has helped me create 'family' in many other ways. He's good that way, right?
Since childhood, I found art to be a great friend. The smell & snap of opening a new box of crayons still brings back memories of a Christmas when coloring books & crayons were all my parents could afford. I buy myself a new box every Christmas. Next came a Brownie camera, watercolors and oils. Over time, Nikon, Golden, Jacquard, Ampersand, Ultrecht, Shiva & Gamblin became new best friends, too.
Raising children, backpacking in Europe, living briefly in North Dakota, painting murals in CA, & operating a weaving studio in Taos, NM, have all contributed to my artistic expressions. My husband is disabled & I juggle care-giving with studio time, and I wouldn't have it any other way. William is legally blind, so I paint large and with bold, bright jewel tones and strong contrast for his weak eyesight. My smaller mixed-media collages are multiple layers of textures, painted and/or gelli-printed papers. My go-to shape is always a circle symbolizing God's supernatural, eternal Presence in the midst of our human tensions & chaos.
I find inspiration for balancing contrasts in modern architecture, nature and textiles, and intentionally juxtapose organic shapes with geometric lines and grids. Though some methods are calculated, I welcome intuition, spontaneity and accidental discoveries while exploring these diverse aesthetic expressions.
My work is collected across America and as far away as Kyoto, Japan.
